The Mair Rajputs of Punjab truly are a Rajput tribe in their own right. The Mairs originally were from Ajmer and gradually settled in the north in Punjab and in the southeast in Madhya Pradesh. The Bhattis, who are a Chandravanshi tribe, and the Chauhans may well have contributed several gothras to the Mair Rajputs. Over time, many Mairs adopted the occupation of goldsmithing because of its respectability in medieval India. The various historical references and the legends surrounding so many Mair Rajput gothras all point to these conclusions. Of course, additional research should be done on this subject, and awareness of this information should be spread to as many Mair Rajputs as possible.
